Commander is four players, 40 life each, commander damage, tokens, and counters on everything. The right pod gear keeps a game night readable. These are the life counters, dice, playmats and small table upgrades we'd put in our own bag.

The short answer: a Gamegenic Double Life Counter for life, a block of 12mm d6 dice for counters and tokens, and a stitched playmat. That kit costs about $65 and covers almost every Commander board state.
Best life counters for 40 life
A spindown d20 only goes to 20, which makes it awkward for Commander's 40 life. Two-dial counters are the better tool.
Gamegenic Double Life Counter
Two dials, 0 to 99 · about $12
The cleanest physical way to track 40 life. Comes in land-art editions and set-themed versions, including Reality Fracture.
The catch: It won't track commander damage.
Gamegenic Life Counters (4 pack)
Four single dials · about $12 to $15
One per player at the table, or use the spares for commander damage and poison.
Ultra Pro Gold Abacus Life Counter
Two rotating dials, 0 to 99, metal · about $23 to $26
Heavy, satisfying, and looks like a gift. A nice upgrade over a dice pair.
The catch: Expensive for what it does.
For commander damage, most players use a free phone app such as Lotus or Lifetap. Physical commander-damage trackers are mostly handmade on Etsy.
Best dice and counters
Chessex 12mm d6 dice block (36 dice)
36 small six-sided dice · about $28
The standard for tracking +1/+1 counters, tokens and anything that stacks. 36 dice is enough for a token deck that goes wide.
Wooden counter and token set
Laser-cut +1/+1, -1/-1 and loyalty markers · about $30
Covers the board states Commander creates, and reads more clearly than dice when a pod has six piles of counters.
The catch: Third-party brands vary. Read reviews for the set you pick.
Monarch, initiative and day/night markers: there is no current official set. Most Commander precons include token cards for these, so check your deck box before buying.
Playmats and table upgrades
Ultimate Guard Play-Mat Monochrome
Standard size, plain color · about $20 to $25
Durable, easy to clean, and no art to fight with your cards.
Ultra Pro Commander playmats
Officially licensed art, standard or stitched · about $27 to $40
Commander-themed art from recent sets. Stitched edges stop the fraying.
Inked Gaming stitched playmat
Standard or oversize, custom art · about $25 to $40
Upload your own art or pick from a big library. Great as a personalized gift.
Ultimate Guard Magnetic Card Case 35pt
Magnetic one-touch holder · about $5 to $8
A cheap way to display your commander in the command zone and protect it at the same time.
Dice tray
Folding leather or wood tray · about $10 to $30
Keeps dice from rolling into someone else's board. A small upgrade the whole pod will appreciate.
Key takeaways
Use a two-dial counter for 40 life, not a spindown.
A block of small d6 dice handles counters and tokens for the whole pod.
Track commander damage with an app unless you want an Etsy tracker.
A magnetic card case is the cheapest command-zone upgrade.
Still need somewhere to keep it all? Several of the boxes in our deck box guide have a built-in dice tray.
