Nauctis: The Sunken Realm Release Date, Prerelease, and Commander Decks

Nauctis: The Sunken Realm releases on Friday, February 5, 2027. It is Magic's first fully underwater plane and the first in-universe set of 2027. Prerelease events are expected the week before, starting January 29. Four Commander decks were announced for the set. Previews, set code, and prices are not public yet.

The tabletop release date is Friday, February 5, 2027, per Wizards' 2027 announcement and the set's product page. It is the first of three in-universe sets in 2027, ahead of Kamigawa: Titanbreach on June 4 and a return to Zhalfir on October 1. Prerelease events are reported for the week starting Friday, January 29, 2027, one week before release, which matches how every recent premier set has run. Wizards has not posted prerelease dates on the product page yet, so confirm with your local game store before you plan a weekend around it. Stores usually open prerelease sign-ups about a month out.

There is no official preview schedule yet. Premier sets usually get a small first look a few months out and full preview season about four weeks before release, which points to January 2027 for Nauctis. Wizards says MagicCon Atlanta (November 13 to 15, 2026) will carry sneak previews of 2027, so that is the likeliest place for a first look, though Nauctis is not named in the programming yet.

Nauctis is a brand-new plane, and it is Magic's first set to take place entirely underwater. Wizards describes an endless ocean with cities beneath the waves and gods who swim alongside their followers. The product page splits the world into depth zones: the shimmering shallows, the Grand Marine, and the abyss "where ancient power dwells."

The story centers on two warring kingdoms and a group of unlikely heroes trying to stop their home from being swallowed by the depths. Wizards has confirmed merfolk, seals, homarids (lobster folk) and humans as residents. GameSpot's coverage reports that Nauctis opens a new multi-year story arc, picking up after Reality Fracture wraps in October 2026.

No mechanics have been officially named yet. The biggest detail so far came from the MagicCon Amsterdam panel: Nauctis has no flying, a first for a Magic set, and a new evasion mechanic takes its place, per StarCityGames' panel coverage. That claim is not in Wizards' written announcements yet, so treat it as reported.

Panel coverage from The Cardboard Chronicles adds that designers deliberately built out all five colors underwater instead of making it a blue set, with shark folk, squid folk and surface dwellers in diving suits. Nauctis ships with four Commander decks. Wizards announced at MagicCon Amsterdam that every set releasing in 2027 gets four precons, as Popverse reported. Deck names, color identities, commanders and price are not revealed.
