Magic: The Gathering | Marvel: Darkhold Destiny releases on Friday, April 9, 2027, and is available for preorder now. Wizards of the Coast revealed it at New York Comic Con on October 9, 2026, as the first Universes Beyond set built around an original story written by Magic's own narrative team. Commander decks and Scene Boxes are confirmed. Prerelease dates, preview season, MTG Arena timing and prices are not announced yet.

Last checked October 10, 2026 against Wizards of the Coast's announcement and the card text published on Scryfall. Anything Wizards has not put in writing is marked below as reported or unconfirmed, and this page updates as reveals land.

Darkhold Destiny key facts

  • Prerelease: not announced. Recent sets put prerelease a week before release, which points to the week of April 2, 2027.

  • Previews and MTG Arena: no schedule announced.

  • Story: an original Marvel Universe story from Magic's narrative team, with a tie-in Marvel comic by Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly.

  • New mechanic: Vengeance, a spell attached to a creature that you cast only from your graveyard, first seen on Hela, Mistress of Darkness.

  • Commander decks: confirmed by Wizards. EDHREC reports four from the panel: Strange Academy, Gods of Asgard, Midnight Sons and Lords of Hel. No decklists yet.

When does Marvel: Darkhold Destiny release?

The tabletop release date is Friday, April 9, 2027, stated in Wizards' own announcement and matched by Star City Games, Draftsim and Scryfall's set listing. Variety and Bleeding Cool both printed April 7, 2027 instead. EDHREC gives April 7 as the date the physical comic arrives, which is the likely source of the mix-up, so this page goes with Wizards' April 9.

Darkhold Destiny is the second set of 2027, two months after Nauctis: The Sunken Realm on February 5 and ahead of Kamigawa: Titanbreach in June. Draftsim reports it as the first of three Universes Beyond sets planned for 2027. Our MTG release calendar for 2026 and 2027 has every date in one place.

When is the Darkhold Destiny prerelease, and when do previews start?

Neither is announced. Premier sets have run prerelease events the week before release, which would put Darkhold Destiny prereleases around April 2 to 8, 2027, but that is a pattern rather than a date. If you want a seat, ask your local game store once Wizards posts the schedule, since stores usually open sign-ups about a month out.

A first batch of cards is already public. Wizards showed a handful on stage and in its announcement, and Scryfall lists the official text for seven nonbasic cards so far. Full preview season usually starts about four weeks before release, which points to March 2027. MTG Arena and Magic Online release dates are not announced.

Darkhold Destiny is the first Universes Beyond set with its own original story

Every earlier Universes Beyond set adapted an existing story. For Darkhold Destiny, Wizards says it worked with Marvel "to craft an all-new, original story set in the Marvel Universe," told "in a distinctly Magic way." The plot follows the Darkhold, a book of dark magic that sorcerers sealed away, as its secrets get loose. Wizards describes a "dimension-hopping narrative" through the Dark Dimension and Marvel's pantheon of gods, and its press description quoted by Variety says the story "unfolds across nearly 30 dimensions."

The story continues off the cards. A new Marvel comic written by Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly introduces the origin of a brand-new character, with a digital release in February 2027 and a physical release in April 2027, per Wizards. ComicsBeat reports that the set was revealed at the end of Marvel's "Bullpen Bulletins" panel, and that narrative set lead Dillon Deveney described a brand-new narrative of a kind Universes Beyond has not done before.

Doctor Strange, Thor, Hela and Dormammu lead the Darkhold Destiny cast

Wizards' press description, quoted by Variety, names four main characters: Doctor Strange, Thor, Hela and Dormammu. EDHREC reads Strange and Thor as the protagonists and Hela and Dormammu as the villains, which is EDHREC's inference and not something Wizards has said. The announcement itself names Magik, who arrives "via her stepping disks," and promises werewolves, vampires, witches and Super Villains making their Magic debut.

The rest of the cast comes from the key art and panel coverage:

  • Confirmed on revealed cards: Hela and Magik (Illyana Rasputin).

  • Named by Wizards in its press description: Doctor Strange, Thor, Hela, Dormammu.

  • Shown in key art, reported by Star City Games, EDHREC and Draftsim: Scarlet Witch, Blade, Ghost Rider and Moon Knight.

  • Reported by MTG Rocks only: Doctor Voodoo.

  • The new character: unnamed so far. Wizards says only that the comic tells their origin.

Darkhold Destiny cards revealed so far

The card text below is the official preview text listed on Scryfall, which credits the previews to TheGamer. Commentary on how the cards play is labeled with its source.

The Darkhold is The One Ring with a cost that depends on your hand

The Darkhold is a three-mana legendary artifact with the Book subtype, the set's centerpiece and its announcement card. Its text reads: "{T}: Put a sin counter on The Darkhold. Draw a card for each sin counter on it, then you lose 1 life for each card in your hand." A second ability, "{6}{B}{B}, {T}: Each player's life total becomes the lowest life total among all players," works only at sorcery speed.

The comparison everyone reached for is The One Ring, which also draws one more card each time it taps. The difference that bites: The One Ring charges life per burden counter at upkeep, while The Darkhold charges per card left in your hand right after drawing, so a deck that empties its hand quickly pays far less. The Darkhold also has no turn of protection when it lands. MTG Rocks calls it "absolutely insane" in Commander, and its first-look piece compares the second ability to Repay in Kind. Paying life down and then leveling every opponent to your total is the obvious line, and the first Commander deckbuilders will find out whether it is as good as it reads.

Hela, Mistress of Darkness introduces Vengeance, and its first spell is a tutor

Hela, Mistress of Darkness is a six-mana 6/6 legendary God Sorcerer Villain: "Whenever a player loses life during your turn, you may create that many tapped 2/2 black Zombie creature tokens. Do this only once each turn." Attached to her is Dark Tutor, a three-mana sorcery with the new Vengeance subtype: "(Cast only from your graveyard. Then exile it.) Search your library for a card, put it into your hand or graveyard, then shuffle. You lose 3 life."

Vengeance works like an Adventure in reverse. The spell half lives on the creature card, but you can cast it only once the creature is in your graveyard. Dark Tutor is Grim Tutor at the same mana cost with an extra option to put the card straight into the graveyard, which is why MTG Rocks calls it "strictly-better" and points out that Grim Tutor already sits in more than 197,000 decks on EDHREC. The catch: Hela has to reach the graveyard first, through a discard, a mill or a dead 6/6, before the tutor exists.

Magik, Illyana Rasputin transforms only after you sacrifice two permanents in a turn

Magik, Illyana Rasputin is a three-mana black and red 3/3 that exiles the top card of your library each upkeep and lets you play it that turn. At your end step, if you sacrificed two or more permanents that turn, she transforms into Darkchild, Demon Uncaged, a 4/4 that exiles cards until it hits a nonland card and lets you play all of them, and can pay 4 life to gain indestructible and tap. MTG Rocks compares the front face to Phyrexian Arena and flags the transform condition as hard for most decks to meet.

The rest of the first look: Arcane spells, a Dimension land and a Time Stone

  • Hela's Arcanum: a five-mana Arcane instant that spends five pawprint points across three modes, including a deathtouch pump, a return-on-death effect and a board wipe of non-Zombie creatures with power 3 or less. It brings back both the Arcane subtype and Bloomburrow's pawprint modes.

  • Penance Stare: a one-mana white instant that destroys an attacking creature with mana value 3 or less.

  • Rise from the Nether: a seven-mana Arcane sorcery that makes a 3/1 black Mindless-One token for each noncreature, nonland card in your graveyard.

  • Temple of Khonshu: a common white and black dual land that enters untapped if you control a Dimension. Wizards has not explained what a Dimension is yet.

  • Gargantos, the Endbringer: shown by Wizards in a borderless frame. MTG Rocks reports that it doubles its own counters and expects it in a Commander deck or Scene Box. Its text is not on Scryfall yet.

  • An Infinity Stone illustrated by Volkan Baga: EDHREC labels it The Time Stone, and MTG Rocks guesses the same from its green color. Wizards has not shown its name or text.

Darkhold Destiny Commander decks: four names reported, no decklists

Wizards confirms that the set has Commander decks and Scene Boxes, and that "even more arcane curiosities" sit in them, but its announcement does not name the decks. EDHREC reports four from the panel box art:

  • Strange Academy

  • Gods of Asgard

  • Midnight Sons

  • Lords of Hel

Treat the names as reported until Wizards prints them. Color identities, face commanders, decklists and prices are all unannounced. Every 2027 set gets four Commander decks under the plan Wizards laid out at MagicCon Amsterdam, as Popverse reported, which fits the four names EDHREC lists. Expect a deck-by-deck breakdown here once decklists appear, the same treatment the Marvel Super Heroes precons got.

God Packs

Wizards' 2027 booster update brings God Packs, boosters where every nonbasic card is a rare or mythic rare, to "each Magic Multiverse set going forward (with Universes Beyond sets expected in 2028)." Darkhold Destiny is a Universes Beyond set releasing in 2027, so it should not have them. The same article starts the Booster Pack rename and the removal of foil commons and uncommons with Nauctis, and Wizards has not said yet whether Darkhold Destiny boosters follow those changes. Our God Packs explainer covers the odds and what boosters lose.

Darkhold Destiny is the third Marvel set, after Spider-Man and Marvel Super Heroes

Variety calls Darkhold Destiny the third Universes Beyond release under Magic and Marvel's multiyear deal. ComicsBeat places it after Marvel's Spider-Man and Marvel Super Heroes, which released on June 26, 2026 with four Commander precons: Avengers Assemble, Doom Prevails, The Fantastic Four and Wakanda Forever. Draftsim notes that Doctor Strange, Thor and Scarlet Witch return from that summer set, while Ghost Rider, Moon Knight and Blade push the tone darker. Our Marvel Super Heroes precon upgrade kits cover those four decks.

The panel also announced three more Marvel products that sit outside the main set:

  • Secret Lair Countdown Kit: Marvel's History of Heroes: 30 cards by more than 30 artists, on sale November 2, 2026 at 9 a.m. PT for $199.99 in limited quantity, per Variety and EDHREC.

  • Doomsdrop: a multi-drop Secret Lair series that will "predominantly feature Doctor Doom," per Wizards' statement to Variety. No dates or prices yet.

  • Avengers: Doomsday promo: Variety reports that fans who see Avengers: Doomsday on opening weekend in Infinity Vision at Regal Cinemas receive an exclusive Doctor Doom Magic card. Geeks + Gamers reported in July that the card is called Doctor Doom, King of Latveria and requires a free Regal Crown Club membership at a U.S. Regal theater. Neither detail is in Wizards' announcement, so treat them as reported.

If you are tracking the Marvel Secret Lairs, our Marvel Zombies Secret Lair breakdown and the Secret Lair drop schedule cover what has already sold.
