Liliana Vess has been mono-black for twenty years. In October, there is a version of her in white, and she is not the only planeswalker coming out of Reality Fracture wearing the wrong colors. Here is what is confirmed, what is teased, and why the Echoverse makes color-shifted versions of iconic characters not just possible but the entire point of the set.
Spoiler season for Reality Fracture runs through September. This page updates as each color-shifted walker is confirmed.
What is the White Liliana card?
The White Liliana reveal traces back to the Lorwyn Eclipsed story earlier this year, which set up the alternate-reality thread the Metronome Arc has been pulling all along. In the Echoverse, Jace's manufactured "perfect" Multiverse, the people we know took different paths, and their color identities followed. A Liliana who never made her deals does not end up in black. That is the story logic, and the card design follows it.
Why does Reality Fracture color-shift planeswalkers?
Reality Fracture closes the three-year Metronome Arc. Jace, now calling himself The Theorist, built the Echoverse as a Multiverse without Bolas, the Eldrazi, or Phyrexia, and populated it with echo versions of the people he knew, including a bizarro Strixhaven called Hexhaven. Chandra, Liliana, and Ajani cross in to stop him, which puts prime versions and echo versions of the same characters in one set. Blue Chandra and Black Garruk are the teased shifts alongside White Liliana. Design-wise, it is Planar Chaos energy with a story reason attached.
One boundary worth knowing: the Echoverse is in-universe story, not a crossover. Where Universes Beyond sets sit relative to Magic's actual canon is covered in our Universes Beyond canon explainer.

The color-shifted roster so far
White Liliana: confirmed by the Lorwyn Eclipsed story thread; the card itself lands during Reality Fracture previews.
Blue Chandra: teased. A Chandra without the fire is the set's best argument that the Echoverse is wrong.
Black Garruk: teased, and the one veterans will note has precedent: Garruk has crossed into black before. The Echoverse version comes at it from a different story angle.
Echoed Pairs: the mechanic tying prime and echo versions together. Our Echoed Pairs explainer covers how the pairing works.
When can you get them?
Reality Fracture releases October 2, 2026, with prereleases September 25 to October 1 and Arena on September 29. Card Kingdom's presale opens August 26. If history holds, the color-shifted walkers will be the set's most-searched cards and their alternate treatments the early price leaders. The set also brings six Commander precons, covered in our Reality Fracture precon guide, and the full timeline lives on the 2026 to 2027 release calendar.
