Reality Fracture puts two versions of the same character in one set: the one you know, and the one Jace's Echoverse invented. Echoed Pairs is the mechanic that connects them. Full rules text lands during spoiler season, but the shape of it is already clear, and if you play Commander or collect planeswalkers you will want to understand it before previews start.
This page updates as Wizards publishes the official rules. Spoiler season runs through late September; release is October 2.
What are Echoed Pairs?
Echoed Pairs is Reality Fracture's mechanical identity: cards representing the prime and echo versions of a character are designed as linked pairs. The Echoverse premise makes this literal. Jace built a "perfect" Multiverse populated with alternate versions of everyone he knew, so the set contains both a Liliana and her white-aligned echo, both realities in one card pool. The pairing is the point: the set wants you to notice what changed and what it costs.
What we know about how the pairing works
Wizards has confirmed the name and the concept; exact rules text is still under wraps. The open questions we are tracking for spoiler season: whether pairs reference each other by name, whether you can run both halves in one deck for a payoff, and how the pairing behaves in Commander, where color identity determines what an echo version can even go in. A White Liliana echo is a different deckbuilding object than the black original, and that is clearly deliberate.
Worth noting for lore readers: Reality Fracture is in-universe story, unlike the crossover sets around it. Where that line actually sits is our Universes Beyond canon explainer.
Be the player who already gets the new mechanic
The full Echoed Pairs rules breakdown lands in your inbox the week Wizards publishes it. Plain language, free, three minutes.
Why it matters for players and collectors
Commander: new legal versions of iconic characters in new color identities means new commanders for archetypes that never had them. The color-shifted planeswalker roster is where that starts.
Collectors: paired cards create natural two-card sets, and history says the market prices completed pairs above the sum of their halves.
Story readers: the pairs are the arc's finale rendered in card design. The set closes the three-year Metronome Arc, and the echoes are the argument.
