⚡ SparkMTG — Marvel Super Heroes Lands, and a Ban Looms Week of June 22–28, 2026
The whole week bends around one date: Marvel Super Heroes hit retail shelves June 26, the biggest blockbuster set on the 2026 calendar, after a prerelease-only window that ran since June 19. The set is already shaking formats, and a Banned & Restricted announcement on June 29 points straight at it. Off the table, the people who build Arena voted to unionize in a landslide, and the community lost one of its most beloved artists. Here is the week that mattered.

Marvel Super Heroes Officially Hits Retail Shelves
The year's marquee set unlocked for retail sale June 26, capping a prerelease-only window that had limited sales to local game stores since June 19. It is the largest expansion to Magic's Legendary creature list ever, packed with familiar MCU faces and four Commander precons. Supply stayed tight all week, which sent early prices soaring. The first weekend opens the floodgates. Read more →
MTG Arena Workers Unionize in 83% Landslide
The Wizards employees who build MTG Arena voted to form a union with the Communication Workers of America, with the count finalized June 23. Support was overwhelming: of 102 eligible voters, 79 backed the union and 16 opposed it, an 83% margin. The team behind Magic's digital platform now joins a broader wave of labor organizing across the games industry. Read more →
A Monday B&R Is Aimed Straight at Marvel
Magic's next Banned & Restricted announcement landed on June 29 after a last-second schedule change, and Marvel cards sit squarely in the crosshairs. In Pauper, a two-card infinite-damage combo using Seeker of Skybreak plus Marvel's Hawkeye's Bow has won every major event of the past week. Wizards even invited players to test the combo before staff locked their decisions on June 26. Read more →
Wizards Crowdsourced the Ban Decision
In a rare move, senior designer Gavin Verhey publicly asked fans to test the new Pauper combo and report back, rather than relying on theorycraft alone. Staff had until June 26 to lock in their B&R calls for Monday. It is an unusually open look at how the Pauper Format Panel weighs a power outlier against a format's chance to adapt. Read more →
The Marvel Villain WotC Cut From Two Sets in a Row
Mephisto, one of Marvel's marquee devils, appeared on the potential villain list for last year's Spider-Man set and again in the vision design document for Marvel Super Heroes. He never made it onto a card in either set. The double cut is a small window into how Universes Beyond design decides which characters fit the mechanical and tonal brief, and which get held back. Power-Up, Connive, and Plan: Marvel's New Mechanics
EDHREC's breakdown of the set's three new abilities is the fastest way to understand how Marvel plays at the Commander table. Power-up gives a creature a discounted activated boost the turn it enters, Villains lean on Connive, and the new Plan mechanic rewards setup. The mechanics are deliberately simple, built to onboard the wave of new players the Marvel brand brings in. Read more →
Upgrading the Doom Prevails Precon
Card Kingdom published its upgrade guide for Doom Prevails, the Grixis Villains precon built around Connive. The guide weighs both face commanders, Doctor Doom, King of Latveria and Loki, the Deceiver, and argues Doom is the stronger build-around thanks to his combat-trigger connive and land-discard punishment. A clean starting point if you grabbed the deck. Read more →
A Villain Deck Tech for Loki, the Deceiver
EDHREC's Loki, the Deceiver deck tech leans all the way into the bad guys. Loki makes temporary token copies of your Villains and draws a card whenever a Villain connects unblocked, pulling in support like Doctor Octopus, Madame Hydra, and Mysterio. If you want the schemey, value-grinding side of Marvel, this is the build. Read more →

The Mind Stone and Thanos Top Early Sales
Card Kingdom's early sales data names The Mind Stone the set's runaway chase card by preorder value, the centerpiece for collectors building their own infinity gauntlet. Thanos, the Mad Titan rides Commander demand, while The Fantasticar draws Legacy and Vintage brewers thanks to fast-mana shenanigans off Mishra's Workshop. Colorless flex cards round out the top of the list. Read more →
Jumpstart Mythics Spiked Past $80
During the prerelease window, Doctor Doom, Unrivaled led Marvel's Jumpstart prices at $81 or more on TCGplayer, with only 14 listings available. The card offers a mono-black empty-deck win condition that pairs frighteningly well with Tainted Pact. Low supply is doing some of the work, but real Commander power should keep demand sticky even after release. Read more →
A Secret Lair Printing-Plate Series Is Confirmed
A second metal Secret Lair printing plate surfaced this week, a "Yellow Plate" Growth Spiral, all but confirming the plates are a recurring ultra-rare bonus. With CMYK colors implied, expect at least four variants of each plate. They appear incredibly rare, so pricing is anyone's guess for now. Read more →

Remembering Ron Spears, Magic Illustrator Since 1998
The community lost iconic artist Ron Spears this week after complications from a brain tumor. He later chaired the Illustration Department at the Savannah College of Art and Design. Our condolences to his family. Read more →
