⚡ SparkMTG: MTG Banlist Shakeup, Jitte Unbanned, Marvel Hits Arena Week of May 17 to 23, 2026

Most of us expected a quiet Banned and Restricted update. We got the loudest banlist in years. On May 18, Wizards of the Coast reshaped five Magic: The Gathering formats, unbanned Umezawa's Jitte after a 15-year wait, and sent the secondary market into a frenzy. Add a locked Marvel release date, record Hasbro earnings, and a plagiarism row out of MagicCon, and this was the busiest week in Magic for months. Here is everything that mattered.

The May 18 Banned and Restricted Update Reshaped Five Formats

Modern took the heaviest hit. Wizards banned Phlage, Titan of Fire's Fury and Lotus Field, gutting Boros Energy and Amulet Titan in a single announcement. The flip side was a gift: Violent Outburst returned to fuel Cascade decks, and Umezawa's Jitte became legal for the first time in 15 years. Pioneer lost Cori-Steel Cutter, Legacy banned Undercity Informer, and Pauper gave Bonder's Ornament a trial unban. Standard, despite a loud campaign, escaped untouched. This was the payoff to the Banned and Restricted cliffhanger we flagged last week, and it did not disappoint. Read more →

Marvel Sets Are Coming to MTG Arena, Through the Omenpaths Is Dead

Wizards reversed course on its digital workaround. Past and future Marvel crossovers will appear on Arena with the real comic-book art and names intact. Every Spider-Man card joins Arena retroactively on June 16, and players holding Through the Omenpaths reskins get converted to the genuine versions. The much-criticized reskin experiment is over. Cori-Steel Cutter Ban Cracks Pioneer Open as Competitive Support Returns in 2027

Wizards called Cori-Steel Cutter the format's clear power-level outlier, and removing it should deliver the first genuinely open Pioneer metagame in months. Izzet shells survive but lose a key resilience payoff. The timing matters: Wizards also confirmed competitive Pioneer support returns in 2027, ending a 13-month tournament drought. The format finally has a pulse. Read more →

Four-Color Control Wins SCG CON Cincinnati as the Standard Debate Rages

Zach Aymie took the Standard Regional Championship at SCG CON Cincinnati on Four-Color Control, banking Pro Tour and World Championship invitations. Control grinding through a field stuffed with Badgermole Cub and Izzet aggro is a real result, and ammunition for everyone arguing Standard does not need bans. Not everyone agrees: one widely shared piece argued the format needs 20-plus bans to fix its turn-four speed problem. Wizards left Standard alone this cycle, with the next review tied to June's Marvel release. Read more →
