⚡ SparkMTG: MTG News Jul 6–12, Marvel's Market Takeover and a Standard That Dodged the Banlist Week of July 6–12, 2026
Marvel Super Heroes is two weeks old and already rewriting the price charts. The Ten Rings is up 271%, a "worst" Iron Man card doubled past $60, and a bulk uncommon quietly became a spec target. Off the market, Wizards left Standard untouched in the June 30 banlist despite two archetypes owning two-thirds of the meta, launched its first sanctioned Commander-rules format on Arena, and the community lost a longtime illustrator. Here's your week in Magic.

🗞️ Top Stories: MTG News This Week
Why Standard Dodged the June 30 MTG Banlist Despite a Two-Deck Meta
The June 30 Banned and Restricted update banned cards in Pauper and Legacy but left Standard, Pioneer, and Modern alone. That is a confident call for Standard: public data puts Izzet at roughly 32% of the metagame over the past two weeks, with Mono-Green and GW Badgermole Cub decks adding another 34%. Play Designer Jadine Klomparens acknowledged the format's speed is "faster than we would like" but argued Standard is now more diverse than it was at Pro Tour: Strixhaven and that its problems "aren't severe enough to warrant banning a card at this time." Two-thirds of the meta piloting the same two shells is a lot to ask players to sit through, so this stays a ban-watch story whether Wizards likes it or not. It also follows the targeted-bans announcement we covered in the Candelabra issue. Read more →
What Is Competitive Brawl? Wizards' First Sanctioned cEDH-Style Format
Wizards launched Competitive Brawl on MTG Arena, its first sanctioned competitive format built on Commander rules. Announced June 1 and playable from the 26th, it runs as a separate format with its own banlist, and the casual and competitive versions will only drift further apart. So far the only rules split is losing the free mulligan, but the telling detail is the banlist: for now, Competitive Brawl bans cards purely for their power as commanders. If you ever wanted Wizards to referee the cEDH argument, this is the first real test. Read more →
Longtime Magic Illustrator Lake Hurwitz Has Died
Magic illustrator and concept artist Lake Hurwitz has died, news shared on social media by his wife, Daria. The Seattle-based artist started illustrating for Magic with Fate Reforged in 2015 and built a portfolio of nearly 70 cards, including fan favorites Authority of the Consuls, Memory Deluge, and Veil of Summer. He also served as a Principal Visual Development Artist at Wizards of the Coast. The art on the cards in your deck is the work of real people, and this week the Magic community lost one of them. A Charity Secret Lair Puts Sol Ring to Work for Global Fund for Women
Wizards is partnering with Global Fund for Women on a Secret Lair, a set of reprints designed to celebrate women through the women of Magic, with half the sale price donated through WotC's Our Change Foundation. Wargamer values the cards inside at roughly $68, so the math works before the cause even enters the picture. Secret Lair has had a busy year, from the three Garfield Secret Lairs in our May 11–17 issue to this, and a print-to-demand drop that funds a good cause is an easy yes for most Commander players. The Hobbit Prerelease Roadmap Is Live, and This One Hits Standard
Draftsim laid out the path to The Hobbit prerelease. The set releases August 14 with prerelease events the week prior, and unlike Tales of Middle-earth, The Hobbit is Standard-legal. Kits carry six Play Boosters, a foil rare or mythic, and a spindown die, and the promo card is no longer date-stamped. Smaug the Magnificent is already confirmed, and a Middle-earth set entering Standard is a very different proposition than the Modern-warping first trip, which gave us The One Ring. We track everything confirmed about The Hobbit's release and the One Ring reprint in one place. Read more →

🧙 Commander Corner: Marvel Super Heroes Deck Techs
EDHREC Wraps Its Marvel Over/Under With Part 3
Marvel Super Heroes shipped a record 362 legendary creatures, and EDHREC's Over/Under series is here to sort the contenders from the bulk. The game: predict whether each new commander leads more or fewer than 1,200 decks a year after printing, with a Can't-Miss Pick for the set's surest thing. Part 3 covers the multicolor legends, from Loki, the Deceiver to a skeptical read on Shang-Chi and the Ten Rings, closing out the full slate. Place your bets before the meta does. Read more →
Mole Man Goes 5-0 by Making Infinite Minions
Mole Man, Moloid Master just posted its first Duel Commander League 5-0 as an infinite Landfall payoff. The build treats him as a Crucible of Worlds stapled to a token machine: fetch lands plus Exploration or Azusa, Lost but Seeking stack Landfall triggers every turn, then Aftermath Analyst plus Shifting Woodland close the loop. With 362 new legends in the set, the competitive discoveries are only getting started. Read more →
Building Villain Typal Around Loki, the Deceiver
Marvel Super Heroes handed Magic a brand-new Villain creature type, and EDHREC builds it out with Loki, the Deceiver at the helm. Villains lean on the menacing and conniving mechanics and live mostly in black with blue and red support, a tidy fit for a typal deck that wants both aggression and card advantage. The type only debuted with Spider-Man, so this is early ground-floor tech for anyone who wants their pod's most-hated seat locked in. If you would rather start from a precon, here is the Grixis villain precon built around Loki. Read more →

💰 Market Watch: MTG Price Spikes This Week
Why The Ten Rings Is Up 271% and Still Climbing
The Ten Rings bottomed out around $7.40 after Marvel Super Heroes released and has now climbed roughly 271% to about $30, with borderless showcase foils at $50. The eight-mana artifact refills your hand to ten every end step, which makes it a Commander magnet in any deck that empties its hand, and it has even shown up in Modern Eldrazi Tron sideboards fetched off Karn, the Great Creator. When a set cannot stay on shelves, everything playable trends one direction. Read more →
Iron Man's "Worst" Card Doubled Past $60
Iron Man, Modern Marvel is a long way from the best of the set's Iron Man cards, and it just doubled from about $30 to $60 in the first week of July. That is a five-fold climb from its $12 prerelease valuation. The card is not carrying that price on power level, it is carrying it on scarcity, which is the through-line for the whole set right now. Read more →
Hex Magic Is the Sleeper Uncommon Nobody Priced In
Hex Magic flew under most radars at release, and now it is one of the week's biggest movers. The red sorcery, a hybrid of a wheel and impulse draw, has climbed from bulk to about $2, with foils jumping to $8.50, nearly triple a foil Stock Up. The key wording is "play," not "cast," which lets you play the lands it exiles, and it is already turning up in Modern Ruby Storm and a few Ral cEDH lists. The finance subreddit has noticed, which usually means the ceiling isn't priced in yet. Read more →

The Creature Types That Almost Made It
Hipsters of the Coast reflects on Magic's renegade creature types: the ones that captured players' imaginations but never earned real slots in a set. A short, thoughtful read for anyone who has ever tried to build a deck around a typal line with four members. Read more →
