What happened on October 19

Festival in a Box: Atlanta 2026 sold out in about 20 minutes at $249.99

Wizards announced the bundle on October 5 at $249.99, two per customer, on sale October 19 at MagicSecretLair.com while supplies last, and called it the first chance to get a full box of the set. Allie Atkin at MTG Rocks reported the same day that it sold out in 20 minutes, and wrote that the sale "stings a little bit more" because it was the first time players could get the set at all. Peter Smith at Draftsim put it at "about twenty minutes" and reported that many buyers could not reach checkout despite waiting in the queue, while others did not finish their purchase in time. One Draftsim commenter reported a 30-second queue and two copies, so the queue was uneven rather than uniformly slow.

Draftsim's headline called it a debacle and said Wizards "either doesn't care to address it, can't fix it, or doesn't realize there even is a problem." That is Draftsim's verdict, not ours, and Wizards has not commented on the queue in any source checked for this guide.

Festival in a Box resale reached about $700 within a day, nearly triple the $249.99 price

MTG Rocks saw eBay listings above $450 on the day of the sale and expected more to follow. Draftsim, linking to the TCGplayer listing, put the bundle at around $700 on October 20. Those are asking prices from the first 24 hours after a 20-minute sellout, not a floor, and the next supply lands at MagicCon: Atlanta on November 13. Treat the figure as a snapshot of scarcity rather than a value.

The Festival in a Box bonus card is a retro-frame Notion Thief

Notion Thief is a Game Changer, and MTG Rocks expects this version to be the most expensive one yet

Nathan Ball at MTG Rocks reported on October 23 that the bonus card for Festival in a Box: Atlanta is Notion Thief in a retro frame. MTG Rocks is not sure whether it is a guaranteed inclusion or a random pull from the Retro Frame Human Bonus Cards pool, and leans toward a random pull even though every card in that pool so far has been white. Notion Thief sits on the Commander Game Changers list, added in the list's first update in April 2025, per MTG Rocks.

On price, the cheapest existing paper printing is $1.66 on Scryfall as of November 8, 2026. MTG Rocks cites the Zendikar Rising Commander printing at about $1.66 on the low end and the Special Guests and Secret Lair versions at $7 and $8.50 as of October 23. The bonus card version has no price yet, and MTG Rocks expects it to become the most expensive version, possibly by a wide margin, given the high multiplier retro-frame foils often carry. One caution: the Wizards announcement and the Secret Lair product page list four promos and no bonus card, so the only confirmation of the Notion Thief is the MTG Rocks report.

MagicCon: Atlanta on November 13 to 15 is the next chance to buy

Wizards sells the set at MagicCon: Atlanta, and has not published on-site prices or limits

Wizards' launch article, by Zakeel Gordon and Jubilee Finnegan on August 3, says the set will be available at MagicCon: Atlanta on November 13 to 15 "and at future Magic events," and that attendees can register for events featuring the release. The same article lays out Commander Draft: eight players split into two four-player games, three boosters each, two cards per pick, and a 60-card Commander deck built from the pool plus basic lands. Neither that article nor the Festival in a Box announcement gives an on-site booster or box price, a per-person limit or a quantity, and as of November 8, 2026 Wizards has not published any of the three. If you are going to Atlanta, the Commander Draft events are the published way to open the set at the show, and box sales on site have not been detailed.

Atlanta is a crowded weekend. The main-set Star Trek release lands the same day, November 13, per Wizards' Collecting Star Trek, and the four Star Trek Commander decks hit stores alongside it.

Four more MagicCons in 2027 carry the set, and MTG Rocks expects a Festival in a Box with each

Wizards lists MagicCon: Detroit on February 26 to 28, 2027, then Tokyo on May 14 to 16, Las Vegas on August 27 to 29 and Amsterdam on December 3 to 5, and says the set will be available throughout 2027. MTG Rocks expects a Festival in a Box with each MagicCon, as happened with Mystery Booster 2. Wizards has not announced the next Festival in a Box, its date or its print run, so Detroit is the earliest realistic online chance and it is about three and a half months out.

Is a wider release of Mystery Booster Commander Edition coming?

Wizards has not announced a retail release, and Mark Rosewater's hints point to more boxes, not stores

The closest thing to a supply plan came from Mark Rosewater on Blogatog, as reported by Allie Atkin at MTG Rocks on August 6. He named three levers. Wizards keeps printing minimums for functional new cards, "to make sure the larger ecosystem has enough cards." Wizards is discussing how many Festivals in a Box to print, and "upping this number is the simplest way to allow more players access." And following past Mystery Booster history, stores may get "some access" after the MagicCon exclusivity window. MTG Rocks' own read is that a retail release could happen if demand problems persist across several MagicCons and that it "could take years." Nothing official has followed since.

One signal did follow. Star City Games reported on August 25 that Blake Rasmussen moved the set's Legacy and Vintage legality to January 1, 2027 on Weekly MTG because the set "releases in batches" at MagicCons and Wizards did not want players scrambling for cards before Eternal Weekend in Japan on November 28 to 29 and Italy on December 3 to 6. Commander legality stayed at November 13. That batch language is the clearest description Wizards has given of the release plan.

Who should chase Mystery Booster Commander Edition and who should not

A draft pod going to Atlanta should plan around the Commander Draft events

A box is 24 boosters and a Commander Draft seats eight players with three boosters each, so one box is one draft, and that is the product's whole point. If you are at MagicCon: Atlanta with seven friends, the Commander Draft events are the thing to register for, and the hub post has the pack odds for the new commander slot. If you are not at the show, the next published chance is Detroit in late February.

Anyone who wants one specific commander should wait for singles after November 13

A box holds at most 24 of the 60 new commanders, so chasing one card through sealed product is the expensive route. MTG Rocks expects Whtz, the Bibliophile and Ekthi, Contaminator Priest to carry high premiums because supply is limited, and the first weeks after Atlanta will price in that scarcity. Four more MagicCons add supply through 2027, and Rosewater has said more Festival in a Box copies are the simplest lever. If you want one commander, singles after November 13 are the cheaper route, and patience is cheaper still.

Festival in a Box at $700 is a price for 20 minutes of scarcity

The Draftsim resale figure of around $700 on October 20 is nearly triple the $249.99 Wizards price, the Secret Gallery: Atlanta foils and the three priced promos were worth about $48 in existing printings when the hub post priced them on October 12, and the bonus card is a $1.66 Notion Thief in a new frame, at the cheapest existing printing on Scryfall on November 8, 2026. Scarcity is doing most of the work here, which is also the risk. The promos and the bonus card reach the singles market as boxes ship, and the Secret Lair page says shipping began October 21. If you want the cards rather than the box, that is where they turn up.

Bottom line

Festival in a Box: Atlanta 2026 is gone, resale reached around $700 on October 20 per Draftsim, and the next door opens at MagicCon: Atlanta on November 13 with no published price or limit. Wizards has not announced a retail release, and the only official plan is a set that releases in batches at MagicCons through 2027. If you draft, go to a MagicCon. If you want one commander, buy the single. If you are looking at a $700 listing, the next batch is five days away.
