Standard Bans, The Hobbit Play Booster Delays, and a 550% Goblin Spike
Week of August 10–16, 2026
Wizards dropped a Standard banlist in the middle of what everyone assumed was the off-season, and it took the top three decks apart in one announcement. The Hobbit officially launched on August 14, then immediately ran into distributor delays that push some Play Booster boxes into September. Good week to be a Lorwyn goblin, though.

Badgermole Cub, Stormchaser's Talent, and Gran-Gran banned in Standard (August 10, 2026)
Wizards banned Badgermole Cub, Stormchaser's Talent, and Gran-Gran in Standard on August 10, leaving holes in the three decks that have sat on top of the format all year. The Fantasticar also got hit, banned in Legacy and restricted in Vintage, which ends the brief reign of VROOMsday combo. Play Design's Jadine Klomparens acknowledged in the announcement that Standard's picture is "fuzzier" right now because competitive attention has shifted to Modern over the last two months, which Card Kingdom calls the most unexpected part of the whole thing. The Hobbit Play Booster delays: boxes slip to early September
The Wizards Play Network confirmed that The Hobbit Play Boosters are hitting delays at select distributors, with fulfillment expected to wrap by early September. Star City Games confirmed its own distributor is among the affected and said any non-Play-Booster Hobbit products on your order already shipped. Wizards has not named which distributors are impacted, so if your box has not moved yet, that is probably why. Read more →

Pinecone Strike is the early standout in The Hobbit Limited
The set has been legal for about two days and Pinecone Strike is already the card people keep pointing at. Wargamer's read is that it is the kind of reliable, versatile card that gets identified fast in a format nobody has solved yet. Two mana for three damage to a creature will do that. If you are still sorting the new keywords two days in, here is how Storied, Recruit, Hone counters, and Amass work in The Hobbit. Read more →
The Hobbit MTG Arena easter egg: how to unlock the free fishing emote
On The Hobbit board in Arena, your opponent has a fishing rod dangling near their avatar. Watch it, wait for the splash, then click it repeatedly until you land the fish. Win or lose, you get mail after the game unlocking a fishing emote. The people who build these boards had a bigger moment earlier this summer: MTG Arena workers voted to form the first union at Wizards of the Coast. Read more →
🧙 Commander Corner
Y'shtola, Night's Blessed is the first commander to hit 50,000 EDHREC decks
Y'shtola, Night's Blessed crossed 50,000 decks on EDHREC, the highest total in the site's history, and she did it in a little over a year. On the way there she passed Atraxa, Edgar Markov, and The Ur-Dragon. Final Fantasy's grip on the format is not subtle either: ten FIN commanders currently sit in EDHREC's top 100, and the Scions and Spellcraft precon is still cheap — our under-$10 precon upgrade playbook works on it the same as any other. Mystery Booster Commander Edition: Ashaya's Enduring Bond casts from the command zone
EDHREC's deck tech for Ashaya's Enduring Bond covers exactly the rules headache you would expect: it is a sorcery you cast from the command zone, and casting it requires a legendary creature or planeswalker on board. Command-zone bookkeeping is its own table argument — see the Commander etiquette hills players will die on, missed triggers included. You discover for the amount of mana spent, so the payoff scales as the game goes long, which means ramp and a pile of legends like Azusa, Lost but Seeking and Selvala, Heart of the Wilds. The product starts rolling out at MagicCon and Festival in a Box later this year. Read more →
The Hobbit has 63 new legendary creatures and no Commander precons
The set skipped Commander decks entirely but shipped 63 brand new legendary creatures across Play and Collector Boosters. Card Kingdom's five picks lead with Belladonna Took, a two-mana token commander that draws and buffs, and Beorn the Fierce, who turns your non-Bears into Bears and is now comfortably the best Bear commander in the game. If you are wondering where to actually buy into these, we covered why The Hobbit has no Commander precons and what Scene Boxes are. The next real Commander precons land November 13 — all four Star Trek Commander precons, explained. Read more →
💰 Market Watch: MTG Price Spikes, August 10–16
Knucklebone Witch price spikes 550% on The Great Goblin demand
Wargamer pegs Knucklebone Witch at a 550% jump, from $1.70 to about $11; Draftsim has market price around $9.50 against roughly $2 last Friday, with near-mint copies listed north of $20 and very little stock. The driver is The Great Goblin, which turns every dead goblin into card advantage and every counter into damage. The Witch triggers on both halves of that loop, about 61% of The Great Goblin decks on EDHREC already run her, and she has never been reprinted since Lorwyn. Read more →
Prime Speaker Vannifar price is up 900% on its single printing
Prime Speaker Vannifar started August around $2 and is now listed up to $20 on TCGplayer. One printing ever, from Ravnica Allegiance, which Wargamer credits as a big part of the jump. Wargamer ties the demand to a new elf and a new ooze. Read more →
Magda, Brazen Outlaw price up 255% on The Hobbit Dwarf typal demand
Magda, Brazen Outlaw sat around $2 a month ago and near-mint copies now start at $7.10. Dwarf typal is the archetype The Hobbit supported hardest, and Thorin, King of Durin's Folk is the main engine behind it at roughly 2,060 decks running Magda, who also slots into the new Smaug commanders that care about Treasure. Total: about 6,300 decks. For the higher end of Hobbit prices, see our Gleaming Gold Smaug pull rates and box topper breakdown. Read more →
