Ten Zeta Set commons are Pauper-legal Monday, and two are banned on arrival

Last week Wizards ruled that the downshifted commons in Secret Lair's The Zeta Set would not be legal in Pauper. On September 4, Gavin Verhey, speaking for Wizards and the Pauper Format Panel, reversed that: 10 of the 12 first-time commons become legal for tournament play on Monday, September 7, while Narcomoeba and Price of Progress are legal and immediately banned because they would slot too easily into existing archetypes. Verhey said the downshifts were never a design decision by Wizards or the panel, but player feedback after the first ruling wanted the cards in the format, so they are in on a short leash, and Draftsim names Vandalblast, Return to Dust, Cut Down, Dispatch and An Offer You Can't Refuse as the big additions to the Secret Lair booster pack with a $150 Chrome Mox we covered last week. Wizards on the Zeta Set sale: "It was a disaster"

The Secret Lair Chaos Vault sale of the Zeta Set was marred by site errors and drew hundreds of complaints on social media. Wizards did not argue the point: "It was a disaster - there's no other way to say it," the company wrote in an article published September 2, shortly after the sale ended. Wargamer's read is that the set will still be hugely impactful on Pauper even though many players will never get their hands on the cards. For the precedent on how a limited Secret Lair prices out after the drop closes, see the KPop Demon Hunters spec watchlist. Read more →

A Jund deck that throws artifacts at you just went undefeated in Standard

Three weeks after The Hobbit, Standard is still shifting, and MTG Rocks credits the Badgermole Cub, Stormchaser's Talent and Gran-Gran bans for taking out enough of the format's core that brews can now perform. Magic Online user filpin took a Jund Sacrifice shell undefeated through a Standard Challenge by building a critical mass of artifact tokens with Obsessive Pursuit and Magda, the Hoardmaster, then sacrificing them. Mutagen Man, Living Ooze makes those tokens cheaper to activate and creates a pile of its own. Read more →

🧙 Commander Corner

Eleven months in, should the Bracket System leave beta?

EDHREC's Levi asks whether the Commander Bracket System, last updated in October 2025 and still labelled beta, is ready to graduate after thousands of games. The system debuted in February 2025 from Gavin Verhey and the Commander Format Panel as a five-bracket replacement for the old one-to-ten scale, where "everything is a seven." Levi expected a yes-or-no answer and found the question got bigger the further he dug, which tracks with the ten hills Commander players will die on. Read more →

The most played legend in Commander is not the most built one

Y'shtola, Night's Blessed may have taken The Ur-Dragon's crown as the most built commander, but Card Kingdom looked at which legends see the most play in the 99 instead. Selvala, Heart of the Wilds leads off as a mana dork with card draw that ends up in countless combos, and Lotho, Corrupt Shirriff is more popular still, thanks to a Treasure trigger that plays in casual food decks and cEDH alike. A $0.49 Knight commander won a Duel Commander event

Sidar Jabari of Zhalfir turns every Knight attack into a loot from the command zone thanks to Eminence, and Matouš Pavlovský-fiala rode that to a Duel Commander win last weekend with a Knight typal deck backed by a Reanimator package. The list leans on one-mana, hard-to-block Knights like Cecil, Dark Knight and Changeling Outcast to get attacking early. If you are building him out of a precon shell, our under-$10 playbook for fixing any precon applies here too. Read more →

Krenko's hot new tech is a Hobbit Goblin

Krenko, Mob Boss is EDHREC's fifth most popular commander and may soon be fourth, and Julia's data-driven Fire and Ice column looks at what is rising and falling in his lists after The Hobbit added a crop of new Goblins. Goblin-town Flunkies tops the Fire list with a score of 12.87, trading Mogg War Marshal's death trigger for haste on two bodies. The staples are unmoved: Goblin Warchief sits at 88% inclusion and Goblin Matron at 84%. For how the set's Goblins and Orcs actually work, our Hobbit mechanics explainer covers Amass Orcs and Recruit. Read more →

💰 Market Watch

Baleful Strix is up 544% on the Pauper reversal

No card spiked harder out of the Pauper ruling than Baleful Strix, up 544% as players rushed to buy potential new format staples. First printed in Planechase 2012, the flying deathtouch two-for-one saw years of Legacy play before Orcish Bowmasters blunted it, and it still sits in over 300,000 Commander decks on EDHREC, most visibly in Yuriko, the Tiger's Shadow Ninja shells. Optimus Prime, Hero went from $3.50 to $14.30 in a few days

Hundreds of copies of Optimus Prime, Hero moved on TCGplayer over a few days, pushing the regular version from $3.50 to $14.30 and the Shattered Glass version from around $30 to $90. Wargamer says Transformers fans will already know why. Read more →

Magic is cheaper to play and more expensive to collect than ever

MTG Price argues that the same expansion period that made Magic relatively cheap to play has also produced the most expensive cards the game has ever had, and Collector Boosters and Secret Lairs are the reason both are true at once. The $25,000 gleaming gold Smaug is the sharpest current example of that top end. Read more →

The Theorist puts three planeswalkers to sleep and can't sway Vraska

Episode 5 of the Reality Fracture story that started August 31 opens from The Theorist's perspective as Chandra, Garruk, Ajani and Vraska burst into his sanctum. He puts the first three to sleep with a wave of his hand, fails to win Vraska over, wipes the party's memories and sends them away, then tries twice more, the last time by taking control of Vraska and Garruk and turning them on the other two. Star City Games has the full recap, and the Magic Story Podcast reads the episode in full. Read more → · Listen →

What a multiverse without Phyrexia looks like

Card Kingdom's lore primer walks through the alternate reality at the heart of Reality Fracture: Jace, using Ugin's spirit gem stolen from the Meditation Realm during Tarkir: Dragonstorm, built a universe where the Phyrexians never compleated him or Vraska, and is trying to overlay it on the real one. The biggest change revealed so far is that Mirrodin never became New Phyrexia, which points at Mirrodin Besieged as the moment Jace rewrote. Read more →

Rosewater wraps his seven-part banned-cards series

Drive to Work closes out Getting the Banned Together, the seven-part series from Mark Rosewater's MagicCon Amsterdam talk on the design of every card he had a major hand in that later got banned or restricted.
