A Unanimous Hall of Famer, a Broken Sealed Format, and an MTGO Teardown
Week of August 17–23, 2026
Javier Dominguez got all 40 votes. In the history of the Pro Tour Hall of Fame nobody had ever done that, and it took seven years to even hold another vote. Meanwhile 17Lands confirmed what everyone jamming Hobbit Sealed already suspected, and Magic Online tore up its entire mid-level event structure on a Tuesday.

Javier Dominguez is the first unanimous Pro Tour Hall of Fame inductee
Dominguez appeared on all 40 ballots, a first for the Hall. The two-time World Champion with 11 top finishes is joined by Pro Tour Final Fantasy champion Ken Yukuhiro at 37 votes and 2023 World Champion Jean-Emmanuel Depraz, who hit the 60% threshold exactly on the nose with 24, one spot ahead of Brad Nelson at 32.5%. This is the first class since 2019, which we flagged back when the Pro Tour Hall of Fame was reinstated; induction is November 15 at MagicCon: Atlanta, and the next class waits until 2028. The Hobbit Sealed is a black format, and 17Lands has the receipts
All but two of black's commons post a higher win percentage than the entire white and blue common suites combined, and the reason is removal density: black gets three pieces of hard removal at common where every other color gets one, so you open roughly three times as much of it in a Sealed pool. Crude Bent Blade sits at a 60.9% win rate, higher than most rares, Goblin Plate Mail is a second clear outlier, and black's aggression pairs hardest with red while green lands mid-pack. MTG Rocks reads the whole thing as another entry in Wizards' rough run of small-set Limited formats. If you are still opening product, our full Hobbit release and One Ring reprint guide and our box topper and gleaming gold Smaug pull-rate breakdown cover what else is in the box. Read more →
Magic Online just rebuilt its mid-level events from scratch
Wizards' reasoning was blunt: Constructed Preliminaries never fired except sometimes in Modern, and about 20% of Challenges and Trials either failed to fire or fired so close to the minimum that the payouts were too rich. Preliminaries are gone, replaced by 8-player on-demand single-elimination Gold queues at 15 Event Tickets or 150 Play Points, with first place taking 300 Play Points, 8 Treasure Chests, and 8 QPs. Limited Challenges swap six-rounds-and-stop for Swiss plus a Top 8 draft, and every Challenge is now named for how many players get paid rather than the minimum needed to fire. Read more →
Arena quietly added a "banned as commander" tag
The August 17 patch notes shipped support for banning a card as commander in Brawl, Standard Brawl, and Competitive Brawl. No card has actually been tagged yet, but Draftsim's argument is that Wizards does not build the plumbing without intending to use it. A card banned as commander stays legal in the 99 of any deck matching its color identity, so it is a scalpel rather than a hammer, and Duel Commander has used the same tool for years on cheap value engines. Star Trek store promos and event windows are out
Commander Party and Two-Headed Giant Commander Night hand out Highly Illogical and Munitions Enthusiast as participation promos, foil at Premium stores and non-foil everywhere else, with stores scheduling one Commander event per period across November 20–26 and January 15–21. A Solemn Simulacrum featuring Lal goes to players who reach the rank of Captain in the To Boldly Go Sealed league, running November 13 through January 28, and weekly Standard Showdown winners get a promo Burst Lightning. If you are still deciding what to pick up, we have all four Star Trek Commander precons broken down. Read more →

🧙 Commander Corner
Gandalf, Party Guest wants a table stacked with legendary Wizards
Gandalf, Party Guest is a four-mana 3/4 that lets you cast a free instant or sorcery from hand at the beginning of combat, with mana value up to twice the number of legendary Wizards you control. That double requirement, critical mass of legends and critical mass of spells, is the real deckbuilding tax. EDHREC's build answers it in Jeskai and leans on Charms and Commands, since Gandalf only bypasses mana costs and modal spells give you the most to do with a free cast. Worth remembering that The Hobbit ships no Commander precons at all, so this one is a build-from-scratch job. Read more →
A seven-cent commander that turns Food into 4/4 bears
Halsin, Emerald Archdruid animates any token you control into a 4/4, which makes the Background choice the whole deckbuilding decision. EDHREC's most popular pick is Inspiring Leader, but MTG Rocks argues that is win-more: an army of 4/4s closes games without the extra buff. Their pick is Agent of the Iron Throne in a Golgari Food shell, giving Halsin a way to win without attacking and a steady supply of tokens to animate and sacrifice. Read more →
EDHREC rebuilt the best Commander 2014 precon under a $120 cap
The Precon Remastered column took on Daretti, Scrap Savant, and the constraints are what make it useful. The $120 ceiling applies to reprints only, every card unique to the original precon stays in the list, the mana base has to look like something a modern precon would actually ship, and no Universes Beyond cards get added. It is a good template if you want to rehab an old deck without quietly rebuilding it into a different one, and it pairs well with our under-$10 precon upgrade playbook. If you would rather upgrade something off the current shelf, our Marvel Super Heroes precon upgrade kits break down all four decks card by card. Read more →

Glóin, Dwarf Emissary is up 406% on Hobbit Dwarf demand
Glóin, Dwarf Emissary cares about historic spells, which lines him up with both the new legendary Dwarves and the Storied keyword at once. Just under 6,000 Hobbit-focused decks now run him, led by Thorin, King of Durin's Folk, and he is also turning up in Smaug decks that want as many Treasures as they can make. With more than 57,500 total decks running him, MTG Rocks' point is that the surprise is not the spike, it is that he stayed cheap this long. Read more →
Tyvar, the Pummeler is up 204% in a single month
Tyvar, the Pummeler is pulling from two directions. In Commander he sits in roughly 50,000 decks, mostly Elf typal, and Thranduil, the Elvenking accounts for over 2,750 of those on his own by keeping Tyvar's activated ability available even after the body eats removal. In Modern he goes infinite with Devoted Druid and Leyline of Abundance, which MTG Rocks reads as The Hobbit outperforming its underpowered preview reputation. Read more →
The Miku deck quietly changed how Secret Lair Commander decks sell
MTGStocks argues the real story of the Hatsune Miku Commander Deck is print-to-demand. These decks normally sell out instantly and flip from a $149.99 MSRP to north of $500; this one shipped a ready first wave plus a guaranteed 24-hour order window, which MTGStocks expects to blunt the premium to roughly $250. The catch is that second-wave decks do not ship until 2027, so the production scale, and therefore the deck's real value, is a guess until then; if you already have one on order, our Hatsune Miku precon upgrade guide is the head start. A leaked Secret Lair Commander decklist is reportedly $300+ in staples
The full list for a deck called Odds and Ends went up online this week, led by Yennett, Cryptic Sovereign, so the theme is cheating out cards with odd mana costs. It is a leak, not a confirmed product, so the $300 figure is conditional on the list being real. Our KPop Demon Hunters Secret Lair watchlist sorts the confirmed details from the rumors on the next crossover drop. Read more →

Premodern found its audience about 15 years late
Wargamer's piece on Premodern, the format invented by former competitive player Martin Berlin, tracks why it exploded over the last twelve months. The pitch is everything the current release calendar is not: no treadmill to keep up with, no power creep to outrun, and a deck you build once that stays a deck. Read more →
Rosewater is five parts into his own ban retrospective
Episode #1374, "Getting the Banned Together, Part 5," continues the series built from his MagicCon: Amsterdam talk on every card he had a major hand in designing that later got banned or restricted. Timely, two weeks after Standard lost three staples. Episode #1373 is lighter: a family trip to Boston and that city's history with Magic. Listen →
