Keen Engineering is the mono-blue Commander precon shipping with Reality Fracture on October 2, 2026, priced at about $30. Wizards published the full decklist on September 18, 2026: the commander is Sai, Master Thopterist, and the deck is artifacts and Thopters. This guide covers what the deck is, whether it is worth buying, the 5 best cards to add, 5 budget picks under $5, the $10 upgrade plan, and the stock 100 with the exact cards to cut. Updated September 25, 2026.

What is the Keen Engineering precon?

Keen Engineering is mono-blue artifacts led by Sai, Master Thopterist: every artifact spell makes a 1/1 flying Thopter, and Sai sacrifices spare artifacts to draw. The 99 holds 44 artifacts, with cost reducers (Etherium Sculptor, Foundry Inspector), draw engines (Vedalken Archmage, Thopter Spy Network, Mind's Eye) and finishers like Myr Battlesphere, Steel Hellkite and Master of Etherium. It also runs 40 lands, which is heavy for a deck with this many mana rocks. Our pre-release read of a value engine that wins with Thopters or one big artifact held up.

Is Keen Engineering worth buying?

Yes, if you like turns with a lot of moving parts and a board that grows sideways before it grows tall. It is the most complex of the five $30 decks, which makes it the best value if you plan to keep tinkering. Skip it if you want to attack early; artifact decks start slow.

Stock or upgrade?

Fine stock for casual tables. The artifact engine works out of the box; it starts slow, but that is the archetype, not the mana.

Lands to fix first

Keen Engineering has 40 lands, 34 of them Islands, plus a pile of mana rocks, so it rarely misses a land drop. The two lands that always enter tapped, Lonely Sandbar and Remote Isle, are both in our cut list already, which also brings the deck down to a more sensible 38 lands.

Darksteel Citadel, Buried Ruin and Foundry of the Consuls are colorless but earn their slots in an artifact deck. War Room is the one colorless land to replace.

  • Cut War Room → add Castle Vantress (about $0.31): enters untapped with an Island, taps for blue, and turns spare mana into scry 2 late in the game.

  • Already in our cut list: Remote Isle comes out for Ornithopter, and Lonely Sandbar for Chromatic Star.

  • Keep Darksteel Citadel, Buried Ruin and Foundry of the Consuls; each one counts as an artifact or feeds the artifact plan.

That is about $0.31 in total, and the land count stays at 38 after our cuts. Prices checked October 12, 2026, cheapest non-foil printing on Scryfall.

5 best cards to add to Keen Engineering

The archetype guess held. Seven of our ten original picks were already in the box (Master Transmuter, Vedalken Archmage, Kappa Cannoneer, Thopter Spy Network, Etherium Sculptor, Foundry Inspector) or are the commander (Sai), so all seven were replaced. None of the five below is in the stock list, and each one replaces a specific card named in the cut list further down. Prices are the cheapest printing on Scryfall as of September 25, 2026.

  1. Mystic Forge (about $3): cast artifacts off the top of your library; in a 44-artifact deck it works like a second hand. Replaces Cultivator's Caravan.

  2. Urza, Lord High Artificer (about $16): taps every Thopter and artifact for blue mana and brings a Construct that grows with your artifact count. Replaces Graaz, Unstoppable Juggernaut.

  3. Tezzeret, Artifice Master (about $4): a Thopter every turn, or two cards a turn once you have three artifacts. Replaces Memory Guardian.

  4. Cyberdrive Awakener (about $1.65): gives your artifact creatures flying and turns every noncreature artifact into a 4/4 for the swing. Replaces Darksteel Juggernaut.

  5. Unwinding Clock (about $21): untaps all your artifacts on each opponent's turn, so rocks and Thopters work twice a round. Replaces Misleading Signpost.

5 budget upgrades under $5 for Keen Engineering

Every card here costs under $5 for its cheapest printing as of September 25, 2026. The five together run about $1.92.

  1. Emry, Lurker of the Loch (about $0.56): usually costs one mana here and recasts an artifact from your graveyard every turn. Replaces Soul-Guide Lantern.

  2. Efficient Construction (about $0.40): a second Sai: every artifact spell makes another flying Thopter. Replaces Tamiyo's Logbook.

  3. Ornithopter (about $0.31): a free artifact that triggers Sai and Vedalken Archmage for zero mana. Replaces Remote Isle.

  4. Chromatic Star (about $0.28): one mana, triggers Sai and Archmage, and draws a card when it leaves. Replaces Lonely Sandbar.

  5. Retrofitter Foundry (about $0.37): a one-mana sink that turns spare mana into Servos, Thopters and 4/4 Constructs. Replaces Aetherize.

How to upgrade Keen Engineering for $10
