Reign of Dragons is the mono-red Commander precon shipping with Reality Fracture on October 2, 2026, priced at about $30. Wizards published the full decklist on September 18, 2026: the commander is Lathliss, Dragon Queen, and the deck is Dragons. This guide covers what the deck is, whether it is worth buying, the 5 best cards to add, 5 budget picks under $5, the $10 upgrade plan, and the stock 100 with the exact cards to cut. Updated September 25, 2026.

What is the Reign of Dragons precon?

Reign of Dragons is mono-red Dragons led by Lathliss, Dragon Queen: every other nontoken Dragon that enters also makes a 5/5 flying Dragon token, and she pumps the whole flight for two mana. The 99 carries 18 more Dragons, Treasure ramp (Rapacious Dragon, Unexpected Windfall, Sarkhan, Dragon Ascendant), cost reducers (Dragonspeaker Shaman, Dragonlord's Servant, Nogi) and top-end like Utvara Hellkite, Terror of Mount Velus and Drakuseth. Our guess of a commander that makes Dragons cheaper or hasty was wrong: Lathliss doubles them instead, and the list already holds most of the cheap Dragon support we had suggested.

Is Reign of Dragons worth buying?

Yes, if you want the deck that makes the table look at you. Mono-red keeps the mana simple, and the Treasure package means it is less clunky than most Dragon precons. Skip it if your table plays fast; it still spends its first three turns setting up.

Stock or upgrade?

Fine stock for casual tables. Mono-red mana and the Treasure package keep it on curve; it is slow for fast tables, but that is the dragons, not the lands.

Lands to fix first

Reign of Dragons has 38 lands and 32 Mountains, so the mana is steady. Two lands always enter tapped: Forgotten Cave, which our cut list already removes, and Spinerock Knoll. The bigger issue is three colorless lands, including Temple of the False God, which taps for nothing until you have five lands.

Haven of the Spirit Dragon, Bonders' Enclave and War Room stay: the first casts dragons, and the other two draw cards in a deck full of big fliers.

  • Cut Temple of the False God → add Castle Embereth (about $0.37): taps for red on turn one with a Mountain out and pumps your team late.

  • Cut Spinerock Knoll → add Sokenzan, Crucible of Defiance (about $2.85): enters untapped and taps for red, and late in the game you can discard it from your hand for two hasty 1/1 Spirits.

  • Already in our cut list: Forgotten Cave, a tapped cycling land, comes out for Sarkhan's Unsealing.

That is about $3.22 for both, and every swap keeps the land count the same. Prices checked October 12, 2026, cheapest non-foil printing on Scryfall.

5 best cards to add to Reign of Dragons

Six of our ten original picks were already in the box (Utvara Hellkite, Dragon Tempest, Dragonspeaker Shaman, Dragonlord's Servant, Thunderbreak Regent, Scourge of Valkas), and Lathliss is the commander. All seven were replaced. None of the five below is in the stock list, and each one replaces a specific card named in the cut list further down. Prices are the cheapest printing on Scryfall as of September 25, 2026.

  1. Terror of the Peaks (about $24): every Dragon that enters, token or not, deals its power in damage to any target. Replaces Chain Reaction.

  2. Goldspan Dragon (about $11): haste, a Treasure on every attack, and Treasures that make two mana. Replaces Fire Diamond.

  3. Balefire Dragon (about $15): one connection wipes an opponent's board. Replaces Hit the Mother Lode.

  4. Twinflame Tyrant (about $26): doubles the damage your sources deal to opponents and their stuff, including Lathliss's 5/5 tokens. Replaces Mana Geyser.

  5. Hellkite Tyrant (about $2): steals every artifact the defending player controls, Sol Rings and Treasure included. Replaces Goddric, Cloaked Reveler.

5 budget upgrades under $5 for Reign of Dragons

Every card here costs under $5 for its cheapest printing as of September 25, 2026. The five together run about $2.45.

  1. Glorybringer (about $0.32): exert it to deal 4 damage to a non-Dragon creature, and it is a nontoken Dragon for Lathliss. Replaces Anger.

  2. Thundermaw Hellkite (about $0.40): haste, 5 power in the air, and it taps every opposing flier. Replaces Cursed Mirror.

  3. Stormbreath Dragon (about $0.34): a hasty nontoken Dragon with protection from white, so Swords to Plowshares misses. Replaces Bitter Reunion.

  4. Sarkhan, Fireblood (about $0.36): loots every turn, adds two mana for Dragons, and his ultimate makes four 5/5 Dragons. Replaces Thrill of Possibility.

  5. Sarkhan's Unsealing (about $1.03): 4 damage to any target whenever you cast a creature with power 4 or more, which is most of your Dragons. Replaces Forgotten Cave.

How to upgrade Reign of Dragons for $10

Start with the Precon Upgrade Playbook: fifteen colorless cards, six cut rules, and a ten dollar mana base that work on every precon ever printed. Then make the five budget swaps above, about $2.45 in total. The exact cards to take out are in the decklist section below.
