Wretched Ranks is the mono-black Commander precon shipping with Reality Fracture on October 2, 2026, priced at about $30. Wizards published the full decklist on September 18, 2026: the commander is Ghoulcaller Gisa, and the deck is Zombies with a sacrifice engine. This guide covers what the deck is, whether it is worth buying, the 5 best cards to add, 5 budget picks under $5, the $10 upgrade plan, and the stock 100 with the exact cards to cut. Updated September 25, 2026.
What is the Wretched Ranks precon?
Wretched Ranks is Zombie tribal with a sacrifice engine, led by Ghoulcaller Gisa: tap her and sacrifice another creature to make 2/2 Zombies equal to its power. Feed her Grave Titan or a lord-pumped Zombie and one activation fills the board. The 99 carries 28 Zombies, four lords (Lord of the Undead, Death Baron, Undead Warchief, Cemetery Reaper), Zombie payoffs (Graveborn Muse, Headless Rider, Vengeful Dead) and mass token makers (Army of the Damned, Endless Ranks of the Dead). Our pre-release read of "Zombies or aristocrats" was half right: it is Zombies first, with few drain effects and no free sacrifice outlet beyond Carrion Feeder.

Is Wretched Ranks worth buying?
Yes, if you like going wide and rebuilding after every board wipe. It has a clear win condition out of the box: Gisa, a big creature to sacrifice, and a lord or two. Skip it if you dislike counting tokens; the board gets crowded fast.
Stock or upgrade?
Fine stock for casual tables. It has a working engine in Gisa, a sacrifice outlet and enough Zombies to win; the lands only need a light touch.
Lands to fix first
Wretched Ranks runs 39 lands, 33 of them Swamps, so it casts its spells on time. Three lands always enter tapped: Barren Moor, Bojuka Bog and Memorial to Folly. Castle Locthwain and Witch's Cottage come in untapped most of the time with this many Swamps.
Barren Moor and Geier Reach Sanitarium are already in our cut list. The other two tapped lands are next.
Cut Bojuka Bog → add Swamp (basic, about $0.10): graveyard hate is good only if your table plays graveyard decks; otherwise it is a tapped Swamp.
Cut Memorial to Folly → add Takenuma, Abandoned Mire (about $10.26): enters untapped, and from your hand its channel ability returns a creature from your graveyard, the same job Memorial does. It is the one paid upgrade here; keep Memorial if you would rather not spend it.
Already in our cut list: Barren Moor comes out for Bastion of Remembrance, and Geier Reach Sanitarium for Skullclamp.
That is about $10 for both, almost all of it Takenuma, and every swap keeps the land count the same. Prices checked October 12, 2026, cheapest non-foil printing on Scryfall.
5 best cards to add to Wretched Ranks
Two of our original best picks, Wilhelt, the Rotcleaver and Rooftop Storm, are blue and are not legal in a mono-black deck; they are gone. Diregraf Colossus, Gray Merchant of Asphodel and Cryptbreaker are already in the box and were replaced too. None of the five below is in the stock list, and each one replaces a specific card named in the cut list further down. Prices are the cheapest printing on Scryfall as of September 25, 2026.
Liliana, Dreadhorde General (about $8): a Zombie every turn and a card for every creature that dies, in a deck that sacrifices every turn. Replaces Mutilate.
Bolas's Citadel (about $9): pay life instead of mana off the top of your library; Gisa's tokens and Kalitas buy the life back. Replaces Charcoal Diamond.
Grave Pact (about $20): every Gisa activation also makes each opponent sacrifice a creature. Replaces Consumed by Greed.
Pitiless Plunderer (about $4): a Treasure every time one of your creatures dies, which pays for the next activation. Replaces Wight of Precinct Six.
Skullclamp (about $5): draw two whenever the equipped creature dies, and Gisa kills something every turn. Replaces Geier Reach Sanitarium.
5 budget upgrades under $5 for Wretched Ranks
Every card here costs under $5 for its cheapest printing as of September 25, 2026. The five together run about $4.77.
Blood Artist (about $3): one point of drain for every creature that dies, yours or theirs. Replaces Razorlash Transmogrant.
Zulaport Cutthroat (about $1.02): the same drain, hitting every opponent at once. Replaces Eternal Taskmaster.
Viscera Seer (about $0.43): a free sacrifice outlet that also scries; Gisa taps, so the deck needs a second one. Replaces Mire Triton.
Plague Belcher (about $0.36): a three-mana Zombie that drains each opponent when another Zombie dies; aim its -1/-1 counters at a token you planned to sacrifice. Replaces Liliana's Reaver.
Bastion of Remembrance (about $0.28): drains each opponent for 1 whenever one of your creatures dies. Replaces Barren Moor.
How to upgrade Wretched Ranks for $10
Start with the Precon Upgrade Playbook: fifteen colorless cards, six cut rules, and a ten dollar mana base that work on every precon ever printed. Then make the five budget swaps above, about $4.77 in total. The exact cards to take out are in the decklist section below.

Cuts and adds for Wretched Ranks
Budget: cut Razorlash Transmogrant (cannot block, and six mana to recur a 2/2 is slow), add Blood Artist.
Budget: cut Eternal Taskmaster (enters tapped and needs mana on every attack to recur a creature), add Zulaport Cutthroat.
Budget: cut Mire Triton (a small value creature the deck can spare), add Viscera Seer.
Budget: cut Liliana's Reaver (a four-mana 4/3 Zombie; Belcher is cheaper and adds a drain), add Plague Belcher.
Budget: cut Barren Moor (a tapped cycling land in a 39-land deck), add Bastion of Remembrance.
Best: cut Mutilate (a wipe that shrinks your own Zombie army too), add Liliana, Dreadhorde General.
Best: cut Charcoal Diamond (a tapped rock; the deck has six other mana artifacts), add Bolas's Citadel.
Best: cut Consumed by Greed (expensive and conditional removal), add Grave Pact.
Best: cut Wight of Precinct Six (depends on opponents' graveyards and does nothing for the sacrifice plan), add Pitiless Plunderer.
Best: cut Geier Reach Sanitarium (a symmetrical loot that helps opponents as much as you), add Skullclamp.
